Chapter 8
Mark had wangled Saturday morning off work. “We need to do something about the back yard this weekend,” he urged, unlocking the back door and stepping outside.
I wasn’t much of a gardener, and I’d pretty much ignored what went on in the garden. I cut the grass, kept the weeds down as much as I could, but that was about it.
“Why don’t we pop down the garden centre and get a few ideas?” I suggested, reaching out to touch a particularly straggly-looking rose bush that needed either pruning or digging up. “Ouch!” I pulled back my hand. “The bugger got me.”
Mark let out a single bark of laughter before coming to my aid.
“Let’s get some advice on what we can plant.” Under my breath I added, “That won’t bite.”
We went back into the kitchen and I ran my finger under the tap.
“Want me to kiss it better?” Mark asked.
”You can give me a kiss anytime.”
So he did.
Just then someone knocked at the front door.
Giddy from Mark’s kisses, I said, “If that’s the Jehovah’s Witnesses, tell them we’re devil worshipers and we’re about to sacrifice a chicken and they’re welcome to come help us.”
“Daft bugger,” Mark said, going to answer the door. “Sam! How come you knocked? We gave you a key.”
“I thought that was just while I was living here.”
“No,” I said, welcoming him. “Just come in.”
“But if Simon or me are upstairs or something, shout up the stairs to let us know you’re here,” Mark said.
“Or something?” Sam smirked and waggled his eyebrows.
“Don’t be cheeky,” I made to cuff Sam’s ear. He ducked.
Sam’s expression grew serious. “I don’t know what you said to Dad last night, but he came home and gave me a big hug. Then he went and had a long talk with Mum.”
“I think he just realised what a lucky man he is to have such a terrific son,” I said.
Sam looked perplexed.
“We told him we had grown really close to you. We also said what you’d said about you treating us like honorary dads. Hope you don’t mind us telling him that,” Mark said.
“’Course I don’t.”
“Thanks, mate.” Mark gave him a hug.
Sam made to sit in his usual spot, but Mark stopped him.
“Just before you came round we’d decided to go to the garden centre. That back garden is in serious need of some TLC. I’m going to turn Simon into a gardener even if it kills me.”
I pulled a face.
Sam giggled. “Can I come with you?”
“If it’s all right with your mum and dad,” I said. “I’d have thought they’d want to spend some time with their son not having seen him for a couple of weeks.”
Sam’s grin was back. “I’ll go sort them out.”
In the meantime Mark offered to help me into my coat.
“Give over.” I slapped at his wandering hands. “Anyone would think we were teenagers.”
“Who was it who said something about spring being when a young man’s fancy turns to watching the sap rising?”
“Sap isn’t the only thing that’s rising,” I said, squeezing Mark’s crotch.
